Making A Plan

The trip back to the academy was an enjoyable one. Danny and his father laughed and talked about the different things they had seen in the dungeon.

One particular story that came up over and over again was a point during their trip back up when Zechariah had slipped while climbing up the steep shaft and had kicked Danny in the head. At the time, it had been rather frustrating, but in retrospect, it was actually rather humorous.

In between conversations, they sat and fiddled with the canteen, but to no avail.

"It's just stuck tight," Danny scowled as he twisted and tugged at the lid. "I don't get it."

"I don't, either, but then, I don't get much of this." Zechariah scratched the back of his neck. "This whole quest…. I didn't know Dillinger well, but he always seemed like a very thoughtful person. He earned his position at the academy, and everyone knew it.

We already know that he designed the first clue to only be decipherable by a joint effort between the Corp and the mages. Then, he hid the second clue in a secret location that would only have been found by a student who tagged along with a master, and who didn't enter the main boss chamber.

I've looked over plans for the Falling Rocks dungeon a hundred times over the course of the years, and I know that chamber wasn't on any of them."

"So…" Danny frowned. "We need to figure out exactly what sort of person he wants to find the book."

"Exactly," Zechariah mused. "If I had to wager a guess, the reason he put the first clue in Corp code was to make sure that the wider authorities knew that someone had set to track down the book. An advanced warning, of sorts, to make sure that it didn't show up and result in more bloodshed.

The dungeon clue ensured that it was a more advanced person, the hidden chamber made sure it wasn't someone too advanced." Zechariah sighed and shrugged. "I don't know. If I had to wager a guess, even if we were able to pinpoint the exact sort of person he wanted to find it, you probably won't be able to track it down unless you are that person, you know?"

"Yeah." Danny frowned then shook the canteen for the umpteenth time. "What do you suppose is in it?"

"If I had to wager a guess, it's a key," Zechariah said. "That's just supposition, though, based on the way it rattles around. You can tell that it's on the longer end of things, but it isn't quite straight.

A key makes the most sense to me. Problem is, we won't know what kind of key, or what it unlocks, until we get it out."

"Do you think we could just cut through the side of the canteen?" Danny asked, hopeful.
